Why "Slingshot"?

The Slingshot Effect- also called a “gravitational assist”- is used by objects traveling through space, in order to gain momentum and save time on their journey.  An object will gain speed by orbiting around a planet or moon, and then use that gravitational momentum to propel itself forward at a much higher speed.  To get the maximum boost from this “slingshot,” it is vital to launch the spacecraft at the right time.
